Abiquiu Lake

Continuing south from Heron Lake, we spent several wonderful days at Abiquiu Lake.  This was a new spot for us and we were thrilled with the Corps of Engineers campground and fabulous hosts.  The colorful cliffs along US 84 on the way was a precursor of the beautiful scenery to come.

The clever arrangement of campground sites allows for good views of the lake for all.  We could watch the threatening storms across the way.

On our walk around the campground, we happened on this very attractive, yet scary tarantula.

The next morning we awoke to some interesting fog around Pedernal Mountain.

And a very different view across the lake.

We visited a couple of interesting places near the town of Abiquiu.  First was the ruins of a large pueblo built around 1400.

It was a bit of a climb to the overlook where the sign told you what to look for . . .

And, sure enough, you can see the outline of the depicted walls.

(It rained while we were on this trail and I guess I didn't change the camera setting.  Please pardon the pink picture.)

Next stop was the Santa Rosa de Lima ruin, built around 1735 by early Spanish settlers.

I'm trying for an artistic shot through the door.

And I don't know what this little building is, but I thought it was too cute to ignore.

We noticed our friends Bob and Donna were also staying at the campground and they guided us to a unique little restaurant in tiny El Rito for some fantastic Mexican food.  It doesn't look like much from the outside.

We arrived home just in time for a lovely sunset.

  4. You did get an artistic photo through the window! Good job. And that is a good sunset, too.
